Institution or private house — what each really gives you, two addresses 80 m apart.

Direct answer

In France, 'Palace' is not a marketing word but an official distinction, created in 2010, awarded by the State through Atout France for three years to five-star hotels with an exceptional location, heritage and service; 13 Paris hotels hold it in the 2026 collection (2 June 2026). Choose a palace when you want the full institution — several restaurants, a large spa, a big team, a social scene — and the reassurance of the label. Choose a townhouse hotel — a former private mansion turned into a handful of suites — when you want privacy, apartment-sized suites, butlers who learn your habits and the feeling of being at home. Two addresses 80 m apart show the contrast: Four Seasons Hotel George V (a Palace) and Maison Bauchart, a five-star townhouse hotel of ten keys and GADAIT's partner, which holds neither the Palace distinction nor a Michelin Key — and does not need to for the trip it is built for.

In detail

What 'Palace' means in France

The Palace distinction was created in 2010 to single out, among five-star hotels, those whose exceptional location, historic or architectural interest and level of service make them the finest of French hospitality. It is an official category, overseen by the State: Atout France examines the application, including inspections and a hearing, and a commission of hospitality and luxury figures appointed by the minister for tourism decides. It is granted for three years. The 2026 collection lists 33 palaces in France, 13 of them in Paris.

The Paris 13 (2026): Bvlgari Hotel Paris, Cheval Blanc Paris, Fouquet's Paris, Four Seasons Hotel George V, Hôtel de Crillon, Hôtel Plaza Athénée, La Réserve Paris, Le Bristol, Le Meurice, Mandarin Oriental Lutetia, Royal Monceau Raffles, Shangri-La Paris and The Peninsula Paris. One practical consequence: the Paris tourist tax is €15.93 per adult per night in a palace, against €11.70 in a five-star hotel (2026 rates).

What a townhouse hotel is

A hôtel particulier is a grand private house built for one family, typically behind a carriage door with a courtyard and, often, former stables at the back. Turned into a hotel, it keeps that scale: a few suites, salons rather than lobbies, a staircase rather than a bank of lifts. Maison Bauchart is a Second Empire townhouse whose two lofts occupy the former stables at the end of a planted patio; it has ten keys, a spa with an indoor pool, a bar, a cigar lounge and a wine cellar, and no restaurant open to the public.

What a palace gives you

Gastronomy on site, often at the highest level; a large spa and pool; a large team with a concierge desk that can open almost any door; event spaces; and a scene — a bar or a courtyard where Paris comes to be seen. For a couple on a short, food-led trip or a traveller who likes the energy of a grand hotel, a palace is hard to beat.

What a townhouse hotel gives you

Privacy first: at Maison Bauchart ten keys mean you cross few other guests, and the carriage door gives nothing away from the street. Space next: two-bedroom suites of 77 to 90 m², kitchens in several suites, and connecting suites that form three-bedroom apartments for six. Then a different kind of service — butlers who unpack, plan the stay with you through a preferences questionnaire, and stay on WhatsApp throughout. And a rare option: the whole house can be privatised.

Our reading

Choose the palace for a gastronomic weekend, a big celebration with guests who expect the name, or when you want to be seen. Choose the townhouse for a family across generations, a long stay, a discreet business trip or a Fashion Week base where suites double as fitting rooms. We say it plainly: GADAIT is Maison Bauchart's official partner and has stayed there; the palaces named here are an independent selection, and we will book them too when they fit better.

This page is general travel information. Facts were checked on 19 October 2026 against official sources (Atout France, the Ville de Paris, the FHCM, hotels' own sites). Nightly rates are directional and never guaranteed: hotels set and change their own prices, and every figure must be confirmed for your dates at booking. GADAIT is an official hospitality partner of Maison Bauchart and says so openly; the other hotels named are an independent GADAIT selection, with no commercial link.
