A Village Brought Back to Life
In 2003, lawyer and law professor Michael Cioffi first climbed the gravel road to Castiglioncello del Trinoro, a near-abandoned medieval village on a ridge above the Val d'Orcia. Two years later he began buying and restoring its stone houses, one by one — with local artisans, reclaimed beams and a philosophy he calls simply a belief in bellezza.
Twenty years on, the village is a hotel like very few in Europe: named after the composer Claudio Monteverdi, awarded 2 Michelin Keys, its dining room designed by Foster + Partners, its artists-in-residence programme counting Wes Anderson, Joshua Bell and Dominique Crenn among its alumni. From the terraces, the view runs from Monte Amiata to Pienza, Montalcino and Siena — and on clear days to the Monti Sibillini.

The rooms are scattered through the village houses — no two alike, all sharing hand-made king beds, C&C Milano hand-dyed linens, heated stone floors, rainfall showers and Santa Maria Novella bath amenities. A Noma-Trained Chef in a Tuscan Village
Executive Chef Riccardo Bacciottini — born near Siena, trained in Paris, at Gordon Ramsay's Maze in London and at Noma in Copenhagen — cooks a Tuscany of foraged herbs, heirloom grains and the village's own gardens. Five venues share the village, from morning espresso to a fine-dining tasting menu.
A Spa Carved into the Village Stone
The spa runs on Santa Maria Novella — products of the oldest pharmacy in the world — and Biologique Recherche. Its 60-minute spa circuit moves from sensory shower to warm hydro-massage pool, cold plunge, bio sauna and a Finnish sauna with Tuscan views, ending in a relaxation conservatory with herbal tea. Signature rituals include the four-hands Embrace of Senses, Roman-inspired warm ceremonies and outdoor travertine-tub bathing rituals for two — Prosecco included.
Thirty Ways to Live the Val d'Orcia

An Entire Village to Yourselves
Few places in Italy let you buy out a complete medieval village: Monteverdi sleeps up to 80 guests and its event venues host up to 100 people. Vows on the piazza or in the lavender garden at sunset, a private dinner at Oreade, private concerts in the 14th-century church — plus a Meeting & Retreat Center in the 15th-century former parish house (four equipped spaces, including the Arena) for boards and team retreats that prefer the Val d'Orcia to a windowless room.
Worth knowing: beyond 30 guests or 6 rooms, the hotel requires a 3-night minimum buyout — GADAIT structures the file (rooms, houses, dinners, guest programme, shuttles) and negotiates the calendar directly with the events team.
A Family Place — Genuinely
Tuscan luxury is rarely designed for children; Monteverdi is. Cribs fit every category, older children take free extra beds in select suites, and there is a real programme: pizza-making workshops, floral ateliers, kid-friendly yoga, guided hikes. The private houses are the family tool — a kitchen for slow breakfasts, bedrooms with doors, and the whole car-free village as a playground. Pets enjoy the outdoor public spaces but do not stay overnight.
